Detroit Dog Rescue - Happy Tails

Here at DDR, we hit the ground running this morning just one day after Christmas. We received numerous calls over the holiday weekend for assistance and although we’d love to respond to each of them, we are only one group. One of the calls was from concerned resident in Detroit. She & her brother noticed an abandoned structure across the street from her home was broken into late last week. Her concerned brother went over to the abandoned house to close the door and discovered a dog - male terrier mix - weak, emaciated & dehydrated. He was being kept up in the abandoned home. For the next couple days they visited the dog, fed him, and gave him water. They knew they had to do something because they already have dogs of their own and could not keep him. They reached out to us. First thing this morning, after we were able to make room to bring him in, we were right on it. Detroit Police Department was able to assist us and we were able to rescue this affectionate guy. Meet Fischer. Check out the photos of the rescue and how happy he was when he was brought into the vet for observation & treatment. We will keep you posted on his recovery and let you know when he will be ready for adoption. As always thank you for your continuing support!

We received a call on 12-26-2012 about a dog left in an apartment building and roaming the hallways. Apparently the owner had moved out and left the little guy. Needless to say, we checked out the situation. Once we laid eyes on this guy, we fell in love. How could someone do this to this baby? We will never understand it. Manderson was on the fourth floor of the building and, from the looks of it, the floor was vacant. As soon as we opened the door he was just sitting there with his tail wagging. We offered him some food and water and he was in heaven. We scooped him up and off to the vet we went. Manderson is emaciated. Once he is checked out and puts on a little weight, he will be neutered, micro-chipped, and ready for adoption. We think he is a 4-6 month old shepherd mix. Manderson is very vocal and the sounds that come from his little body are quite hilarious. We obtained an owner surrender from the manager of the apartment complex since this little guy was abandoned. We will keep you posted on how he's doing and when he is ready to go to his forever home. We know he will be a great addition to any family.

Upon filling a DDR merchandise order to a military base, we received an email with the following heartwarming photos and message.

"I’m writing today to give you my thanks for all you do for the dogs of Detroit. Attached you will find 3 photos of a military working dog named Adar. He is currently with the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia. Adar wanted to show you all at DDR that he supports your wonderful rescue."

Farley__Diamond_Web_2
On March 12, 2012 DDR was contacted by the Detroit Police Department in hopes that we would rescue a 'pregnant pit bull' that was acquired during a drug raid. Upon arriving to the home, we were surprised when DPD officers had found a second dog, this time chained in the garage in poor shape, living in filthy conditions. We entered the garage to evaluate the situation and this bundle of love was beyond excited to see us! He was large in stature and a big goof ball, so naturally he was named Farley. The dog that we were originally called to rescue was in a cage inside of the house and not the most welcoming. After she was surrendered to us, we carried her cage to the car and both dogs were anxiously off to the next chapter of their lives! Once settling down in the car and accepting a good amount of food, both dogs became calm and extremely loving. A wonderful vet clinic graciously took both dogs in for us, providing emergency care to both. Farley's worm testing was described to us as a "petri dish" that they were going to keep for training purposes, because he had every type of worm, including heartworm. Diamond, while thought to be pregnant, actually had Pyometra and X-rays confirmed that she was not. Her bloating was caused by a serious infection and had to undergo hysterectomy surgery. We are thrilled to say that Diamond is recovering wonderfully and Farley has just completed his first round of heartworm injections. If you are interested in fostering Farley during his heartworm treatments, he will need a quiet and calm environment during this process. If you can provide such an environment for him, please fill out a foster application on our website! Also, we are happy to say that both Diamond and Farley passed their temperament testing! These two amazing dogs will make a great addition to any family. Stay tuned for more updates!

Guinness__Lisa_Adopted_Web
A letter from Lisa: When I started working at Camp Bow Wow I had no idea what to expect, except that I would get to work with dogs. On one of the days that I was training I was able to meet all of the dogs, one of the dogs really caught my attention and Guinness was his name. After meeting him I found myself visiting him everyday. I would go in his cabin and give him as much attention as I possibly could. Then I thought why not fost him, so I can see him all the time ... So I did! Within one week I knew that Guinness was not meant to be fostered, he was meant to be my dog. It was safe to say I had become a foster failure. Guinness is one of the best dogs I've ever met. To be able to find a dog with so much love and trust is amazing especially with a past like his. Everyday when I wake up and see him and my other dog Cali side by sid sleeping I know adopting him was the best thing I could do. It really is an amazing feeling to have a life long friend that will always be there for you and that is what Guineess has done for me ... Lisa"
Detroit Dog Rescue would like to thank you Lisa for opening up your heart and home to Gunness. I would like to thank you personally for helping me keep my promise to Guinness the night we rescued him that I would find him a home full of love. - Dante

image_8-17-11_PorkchopDDR was called to action for the rescue of a very badly injured dog and another dog who refused to leave his side. We had no idea what we would find, and after we saw how significant his injuries were, we were amazed that he had even survived. Caught in the middle of feuding neighbors, poor Porkchop was brutally attacked with a samurai sword. He suffered 4 severe wounds from the attack, the worst on top of his head.

Doctors were unsure if they could even bring him back to a full recovery but we had the utmost faith in this gentle giant. Porkchop endured a lengthy surgery to repair the damage and many weeks of rehabilitation. Porkchop spent six weeks fighting his way back to health, with the support of his sister, Strawberry, by his side every step of the way.

DDR is very pleased to report that both Porkchop and Strawberry have been adopted into a wonderful forever homes where they will live a calm, quiet life full of love. image_Bubba 9-8-2001 (40 of 40)Shot point blank in the face by a citizen claiming he was "bothering him", DDR was called to his rescue by the Highland Park Police. We rushed him immediately to the after hours clinic where doctors tried to remove the bullet.  Digging deep enough to get the bullet out would have caused more potential problems for Bubba in the future, so it remains in his snout with virtually no bother to him.

Thanks to a caring citizen, police were called and the man who shot him sits in a prison cell with animal cruelty and unlawful discharge of a weapon charges for the next 3.5 years. After recovering quietly for a few days, it was discovered that Bubba was also heartworm positive. Vowing to help Bubba continue his fight, DDR was determined to help Bubba battle back to 100% health. Bubba underwent heartworm treatment successfully and is now recovering in his new forever home with his four legged brother, Corona, to run free in his giant back yard! *Update 1/19/12 - After 3 months of treatment, Bubba has received a clean bill of health and has successfully made it through heartworm treatment! He is officially adopted by his amazing new family and will able to finally enjoy a very happy life!

Mellow300-4_thumbOur fighter against ALL odds! DDR was called to the rescue of poor Mellow who was shot 4 times and left for dead. He is the sole survivor of a shooting rampage on 3 dogs. Sadly his two siblings didn’t survive. A bullet was removed from his throat and fragments remain in his sinus cavity forever, which has resulted in loss of vision in his left eye. Despite his pain though, Mellow is the calmest, laid-back pup we've met so far! He has shown nothing but appreciation for our determination to his survival.

Mellow was adopted into a wonderfully loving family of four where he enjoys dogs parks, training days and kisses and cuddles from his two human sisters!

image_Honey (1 of 1)Thankfully a concerned family member called us to save her after she was abandoned by her owner. She was found on a very short chain tied to a garage. No food, no water, no shelter. A collar and tags proved that she was once a loved pet. Why anyone would leave this gentle sweetheart behind is beyond us because she gives us all nothing but love. Honey is now enjoying life remembering what it feels like to be in a warm, comfy home again.

*Honey has been adopted into a loving forever home by her foster, Terri*
